Journey to the Heart of Japan: 1-Day Shinto Learning Tour at Ise-Jingu (Round Trip from Nagoya)

1. Visit both the Naiku and Geku of Ise Jingu, a shrine loved by Japanese people. Here, learn about Japanese mythology, culture, and more with easy-to-follow explanations from an English-speaking National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter.

2. Enjoy comfortable transportation with reserved seats on the limited express train for the round trip from Nagoya. With a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter by your side there’s no worry about getting lost, so enjoy worry-free sightseeing. Participants who plan to stay in Ise, Shima, or Toba on the day following the tour may leave the tour midway.

3. Both the Geku and Sengukan will be toured. Learn all about the soul of Ise Jingu, including exhibits on how the divine treasures are made, a model of the shrine buildings, and videos.
*The Sengukan cannot be visited due to flood damage caused by a typhoon that struck the area on Oct. 22, 2017. The completion date of the restoration work is yet to be determined (as of Mar. 19, 2018).

4. Step through the torii gate that guards the Naiku and enter a different world. World leaders visited this spot during the 2016 G7 Ise-Shima Summit. Experience the Naiku’s unique atmosphere which features towering trees and the murmuring of a river.

5. Also enjoy a walk around Okage Yokocho, the side street area at the gate to the Naiku where over 60 shops recreate an old fashioned atmosphere. Try some of the local food such as Ise udon noodles.

Sengukan & Geku (90 min)

– Along with a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter, tour the Sengukan which features models and video exhibits about Ise Jingu and the Shinto religion.

The full-scale model of the Geku’s main hall is a must see.
– The Geku has about 1,500 years of history, and is venerated as the guardian deity for food, clothing and shelter, and industry.

As Ise Jingu is the site of many ceremonies throughout the year, restrictions may be placed on visiting without prior notice.

*The Sengukan cannot be visited due to flood damage caused by a typhoon that struck the area on Oct. 22, 2017. The completion date of the restoration work is yet to be determined (as of Mar. 19, 2018).
If restoration is not yet complete on the day of the tour, customers will be guided to a Geku area shrine, etc. No refunds will be issued in this case.

Okage Yokocho Stroll & Naiku Visit (150 min)

– Okage Yokocho features many souvenir shops and restaurants. See historical Ise-style structures from about 400 years ago that were moved and rebuilt or recreated here, and enjoy local food such as Ise’s specialty anko-coated mochi (rice cake), Ise udon noodles, and Ise lobster croquettes. Please have lunch on your own here.

– The Naiku has 2,000 years of history and is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the most sacred Shinto deity. To visit, cross Ujibashi Bridge which is said to connect the ordinary world and the sacred world.

② If the minimum number of participants (2) is not met by 7 days before the scheduled date, the tour on that date may be cancelled. Please inform us of your accommodation location for the day prior to tour departure, as well as an email address at which you can be reached during your stay in Japan. Customers may be contacted by the conducting company or their travel agent if the tour is cancelled, or for other reason.

③. This tour uses reserved seating on Kintetsu limited express trains for the round trip from Nagoya. Participants who wish may leave the tour midway in Ise. This is convenient for those with plans to stay in Matsusaka, Toba, Shima, or Kashikojima. A pass good for 3 days including the tour date usable for unrestricted travel on trains between Matsusaka and Kashikojima and for designated Ise area bus routes will be handed out. However, you must complete procedures on your own if taking a reserved seat limited express train for the return trip to Nagoya. If alighting in an area outside of the applicable zone the trip will be deemed complete and the pass will be collected, so please be aware of this when using it. If you wish to leave the tour midway please tell the National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter when meeting for the tour. In this case, participants must sign a form stating they will leave partway through. Refunds for the pass will not be issued even if it is not used after leaving the tour midway.

④This is an unguided plan, so please go to the meeting location on your own. Please take care to go to the correct meeting location. Please tell your name to the guide at reception. Ages are determined based on how old the participant will be on the day of the tour.

⑤ This tour is enjoyed on foot, so please participate in shoes and clothes which are easy to walk in. Transportation around the Ise Jingu area will be by route bus, so participants may be unable to sit down. Depending on customers’ walking speeds sightseeing may take more time than planned. Participants using wheelchairs and those who have trouble walking must participate with a companion. Some areas do not have adequate handicapped access. The guide has tasks to attend to, and cannot provide complete support. Also, please be aware that some areas may require detours, or may not be visitable even with an accompanying companion depending on participants’ conditions.

⑥ This tour does not include lunch charges, transportation expenses to the meeting location, and other personal expenses. Also, refunds will not be provided even if restrictions on entry are placed without notice, if a customer does not enter a facility for their own reason, if boarding tickets are not used, etc. Also, seating on route buses is non-reserved, so participants may be unable to sit down.

⑦ Please have lunch on your own while taking a walk through Okage Yokocho. Please ask the guide if you have any questions. However, the guide cannot give restaurant recommendations to those with dietary restrictions, allergies, etc. Please choose what to eat at your own discretion.

⑧ Times listed on the itinerary are estimates only. The order of the itinerary and arrival times may differ depending on public transportation, road conditions and congestion at destinations. Even if the arrival time is delayed, no compensation will be given for flights, accommodation, meals, taxi fares, etc. If making plans for before or after the tour, please leave enough time in your schedule.

⑨ If the Kintetsu Limited Express train reserved seats are sold out, or if the train service is interrupted or suspended, alternative transportation may be provided via JR or other service, or via non-reserved seating. In such cases, arrival time to the destination may be greatly delayed. Refunds will not be issued, and additional payment will not be required in such cases.
